How to use your blog to stand out from the other 999,999 photographers


There’s a million other photographers out there. And that … well, that … can be a challenge.

So why would anyone hire YOU over the 999,999 other photographers?

One of the best reasons for someone to hire YOU is because she genuinely LIKES you. And because she truly LOVES not just your style of photography, but your personality, too.

Maybe it’s your quirky sense of humor. Or the fact that you dwell in a tiny home because you want to travel. Or maybe you live in a large family-style home and enjoy talking about decor. Or maybe it’s your obsession with poodles. Or Ramen noodles. (Side note: I totally thought of noodles because it rhymes with poodles.) Whatever it is that makes you YOU is the very thing that draws people in closer.

It’s not hard to imagine that a bride, for example, might specifically choose to work with a wedding photographer whose style of photography she adores … but who also shares a love of a certain clothing brand or vacation spot. It makes sense because the bride feels a connection with the photographer on a deeper level than simply that of client/photographer.

So, the short answer on how to stand out from the other 999,999 photographers is simply to just be you. Really, really, really YOU.

But let’s dig deeper.

What happens when you talk about something you love … a LOT?

Some people run away. They came to your corner of the Web for the pretty pictures (because of course you share your pretty pictures, like the other 999,999 photographers) … but now you’re wasting their time going on and on and on and on (again!) about that stupid clothing. Or your dumb dog. Or your velvet couch. Or whatever it is you go on and on (and on) about. But, you know what? It’s OK that those people who are repelled leave. They aren’t your ideal clients anyway. 

Your ideal client thinks it’s absolutely charming how much you love your dog. And she too is DYING over that new Free People lookbook. She relates to you. Oh, and she also loves your photos. When it comes time to hire a photographer, she’s going to think of YOU before the other 999,999 photographers.


There are lots of ways to open up and share more about yourself as a person. Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are a few effective social media tools.

But have you noticed that they change from time to time? One minute your feed is in chronological order. The next it’s not. One minute all your followers see your posts. The next, they don’t (unless you pay).

Do you know what will NEVER change unless you want it to?

Your blog. You and you alone have total and complete control over your blog. And the simple truth is that blogs are one of the best ways to help potential and current clients to get to know you. That is … if you do it right!

Wait, though. Don’t the other 999,999 photographers have blogs, too?

Most of them do, yes. So HAVING a blog isn’t anything special. And HAVING a blog won’t set you apart. The only way to set yourself apart and to help people to get to know YOU is to be a good blogger.

Here’s the BEST part about being an awesome blogger …

  • You don’t have to have the fanciest design for your blog. (Phew.)
  • You don’t have to write the wittiest commentary. (Phew.)
  • You don’t have to blog three times a day every day. (Although, this would certainly help your SEO.) (Phew.)

So what do you have to do?

Of course, you want to share photos from your latest sessions. You are a photographer, after all. And yes, you want to promote your business by letting clients know about promotions, specials, and booking limitations. You could stop there and your blog schedule might even be full. If you stop there, though … you will do EXACTLY what most of the 999,999 other photographers do. You will fit in.

You (and I) want to stand out, though!

In order to do this, you’re going to HAVE to share content that is original, interesting, and useful.

The goal is to …

ENGAGE your readers

You know how time just passes when you’re reading a good book? Before you know it, your eyes hurt because you’re still reading even though the sun set. You didn’t even realize it! But you were engaged. You might not be as talented a writer as the author of page-turning novels, but you don’t have to be. You just have to be interesting. 

INTRIGUE your readers

“Hmm … she is always talking about quinoa flower and how much better she feels since removing gluten from her diet. I wonder if …” If your readers wander away from your blog still THINKING about one of your posts, then you’ve done a great job intriguing them. What you’ll find is that clients will show up to a session and start talking about the subject … which is always a great ice breaker.

INSPIRE your readers

People want to be inspired. The fact that Pinterest is SO popular is living proof of this fact! One of the best ways to inspire readers is to share your struggles and victories. Simply put … to be honest, authentic, and real even when the resulting blog post isn’t “pretty.”  We get sucked into weight loss stories … especially when we see the before and after photos. Why? Because it motivates us to make a change in our own life. Other people’s successes make us happy!

By openly sharing with your readers the different journeys you’re currently on both in your business and personal life, you can draw them closer to you. Can you talk about your fitness journey? Can you share with readers challenges and successes you may be having homeschooling your kids? Perhaps you can share the steps you’re taking to live a greener lifestyle. Or how about your quest to become a better photographer? Can you share what books you’ve been reading and the exercises you’ve been engaged in to facilitate growth? What’s going on in your life? That’s the very thing you need to turn into a regularly updated feature on your blog.

The Pioneer Woman started out simply sharing stories about her life on a ranch. She shares recipes, too … but it’s the stories about her family and their ranch that keep people coming back for more. She didn’t have to change anything in her life to become a successful blogger. She just had to regularly SHARE what was going on in her life and that was enough to capture readers’ attention and INSPIRE them to want to try her recipes and regularly check out her blog posts.

TEACH your readers

 People like to learn. And we especially like to learn online. Some of the biggest changes I’ve made to my health and well being have come from things I’ve learned online. Not everything published online is accurate (far from it.) But people’s stories and thoughts have led me to dig deeper and deeper and to eventually learn and grow.

What can you teach your readers? Maybe you have a lot of Moms that visit your blog regularly. Can you share tips to help them improve the quality of the photos they take of their kids with the smart phones? Or how about offering them tips on how to decorate their homes with photos? Or how to choose the appropriate outfits for a successful family photo session?

There are many subjects you can address. If you’re not sure what your readers would like to learn about, ask them! If you ask and are met with cricket chirps, then try out some subjects and measure the response you get from them. If you can see that comments, page hits, or shares go up with certain topics, then you know that you’re on to something! Once you find the topic your readers enjoy, include articles on this subject regularly. It will take some time, but your efforts will not be in vain. Your readers will appreciate the knowledge you’re sharing with them. They’ll hopefully even forward it to others!

HELP your readers

 There’s nothing we as humans like better than to have a problem solved for us. We as photographers get a little frustrated with the fact that there are 999,999 other photographers in our area. But imagine for a moment how our potential clients feel. It can be OVERWHELMING to scroll through page after page of photographers in the hopes of finding someone to hire. They, no doubt, begin to wonder why each photographer has such different pricing. And why some go to homes and others have studios. Which is better …at home or studio? Can you help your readers by answering some of these questions. Help them understand your pricing. Help them understand the type of photography you do and WHY you do it. What are the advantages to coming and hanging out with you in your studio versus staying home for a session? If your education leads a client to actually book another  photographer, don’t worry. That’s ok. It means they weren’t the right fit for you. And nothing is more stressful than trying to please a client who just isn’t the right fit for you and your business.

Of course, you need to share your photography, too!

One of the beautiful things about sharing stories about your own life, is that you’re (hopefully) including photos along with each post. These are photos taken by you (hopefully) and are yet ONE more way to show off your talent as a photographer and storyteller.

Along with all this wonderful and interesting content about your journeys, successes, etc., your blog is a fabulous place to connect with your clients through client shares. But be careful. Don’t do what the 999,999 other photographers do! They stick up their favorite photos from the session and say … “I LOVE this family! We always have the best time!” And that’s pretty much it.

When it comes to client posts, don’t be BORING! With their permission (of course), you can share things like …

  1. what you appreciated about their interactions together as a family
  2. a silly story about what happened on your session
  3. why the location the family selected means so much to them
  4. how the family plans to enjoy their images
  5. the family’s favorite part of the session
  6. the family’s favorite shot from the session
  7. why the family chose you as their photographer
  8. an interesting fact about the family (e.g., their all-time favorite movie is Star Wars because …)
  9. why you loved their outfits
  10. a look back at a few photos from sessions past to see how everyone has grown and changed

As previously mentioned, YES, you will have to get their permission first! But most family’s LOVE to have tid-bits of information included with their post because it makes the post that much more special. Which, of course, makes it that much more shareable!

YES, it takes some time to collect the information needed for the post. You’ll have to contact the client and have her respond to your question(s). But, it’s worth it. It’s worth it to have a client share post that is special. It’s worth it to have client share posts that set you apart from the other 999,999 photographers.

So are you ready? 

Are you ready to start working hard on your blog? It takes time, effort, thought, and trial and error to get it right. But really, in order to stand out in today’s saturated market, successful photographers understand that it’s necessary. It’s necessary to show people why you’re special. It’s necessary to show people WHY they should hire you.

how to sell your clothing online


Did you know that selling your old clothes is now a billion-dollar industry?! In fact, it’s a $16 billion dollar industry, according to Business Insider. (Those aren’t the newest stats either … I bet the number is climbing!)

It’s been a while since I sold clothes online. And things have changed!

In the past, I sold brand-name clothes on eBay and vintage clothes (my favorite type of clothing!) on Etsy. I was mostly selling my own clothing … but sometimes I’d pick up AMAZING pieces at thrift stores and turn around and sell them online. I never tried to make it a full-time job … just something I did from time to time. But over the past few years, I’ve been busy with my photography business and life and just haven’t thought much about selling things online.

Today, though, as I looked into my seriously over-stuffed closet, I realized that it was time for a clean out. And since extra money is always a good thing, I decided to try some online selling. Where, though?

I frequently drop stuff off at the consignment store around the corner from me. I love the people who work there and they do a FABULOUS job selling things. But the problem I’ve had with that route is that the second I walk into the consignment store, I find something I just can’t live without!  And so I walk away with more things than I’ve dropped off. (Pleeeease tell me I’m not the only one with this problem!)

A couple of years back, I downsized from a three-bedroom home to a small apartment. It’s been two years since I made that move … which essentially took me from 5 large closets down to one … and I’m still in the process of purging clothes! My goal is to downsize even further … into a studio cottage of sorts. Happily, there are lots of places like that here in the Hudson Valley. I dream of gardening, having a little doggie, and having VERY little stuff.

My closet door can hardly close these days … so I decided it’s time to look back into selling online.

Turns out that over the last five or so years, a TON of new options have opened up as far as where and how you can sell your clothes online. And that’s really awesome because quite frankly, I kinda gave up on eBay a while back. As their fees grew, so did my annoyance, and I jumped ship. Plus, it seemed to be taking longer and longer to actually get a listing up and running. It just became kind of a hassle. Of course, that’s just my take. PLENTY of people are still loving eBay!

Even though it’s awesome that there are so many places to sell used clothing online, it also leaves me feeling a little overwhelmed. So, where should I sell my used clothes? And is it really worth all the trouble it takes to sort through my clothing, clean them, photograph them, post them, answer questions, pack them, and ship them? I mean, that’s a LOT of work.

For me personally, it’s worth it. And here’s why:

  1. I’m cleaning out my closet. Maybe the doors will finally shut and things won’t fall on my head in the morning when I’m trying to find an outfit to wear.
  2. I’m mixing it up a bit. Although it may sound like an incredibly adventurous life to be a photographer (are you picturing the photography guy in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty?), like any job, at times things get terribly monotonous. Stepping away from my average daily tasks and doing something a little different … especially something in which I can add a creative flair (good marketing is always super creative!) … is good for my soul.
  3. I’m earning some extra change. I’m not a stay-at-home Mom like so many self-employed ladies. I’m a single woman who spends a good 20 hours or so in volunteer work each week. My volunteer work is kinda like my baby ; ) I try and work no more than 20-30 hours a week with my secular work … and sometimes, I work less if other commitments call for it. Therefore, extra money is always good.

If any of those points above resonate with you, then let’s consider some of the different ways we can sell clothes online today! Each and every site is different. Some only accept certain high-end brands. Some offer a community type environment. Others look for vintage treasures. Perhaps the most important thing is to do your research, read their selling guidelines carefully, and then choose which one will work best for you. Or, if you’re really serious about selling clothing online, try out more than one service so you can compare and see what ends up being the best fit.

Here are six of the top spots for online sales.


With Poshmark, you’ll need to download their free app to get started. I’m going to be 100% honest … I didn’t want to! I feel overwhelmed already trying to keep up with the social networks I use for business. I didn’t want to have to add any more apps to my phone. But, I ended up doing it because I LOVED the idea that I could just easily take a picture with my phone and then have the listing up and running in literally seconds. And I do mean … seconds.

When you sell an item through the app, Poshmark’s system will automatically send you a shipping label. Download, print it out, and then ship the clothes. I don’t really know why making up a shipping label always felt like a big task for me. But with Poshmark, I don’t have to do it. I just print the label and tape it on the package.

As for fees, Poshmark takes a flat commission of $2.95 for all sales under $15. You keep the rest. For sales of $15 or more, you keep 80% of your sale and Poshmark’s commission is 20%.

How do you get paid? According to Poshmark’s blog, “Buyers have up to three days to accept the item and after that, the funds are automatically released to you, the seller. Once the buyer receives your package and has accepted the item, your earnings will be automatically deposited into your Poshmark account.”

I love that you can withdraw your earnings at any time and be paid via Bank Direct Deposit or Check Request.

I JUST uploaded some things a few days ago to give it a test run. I’ve sold a pair of shorts and the process was so easy. I’ll definitely be uploading more things in the future. I’m pretty sure that for the moment, this is going to be my go-to way to sell clothing online.



They call themselves the largest online consignment and thrift store. As someone who will literally drive to another state to go to an amazing thrift store, that title alone got me kinda excited! (Except, it got me excited about the wrong thing … buying stuff! not selling!)

With thredUp, sellers can earn up to 80% of the selling price of any item that thredUP can resell. Simply contact them for a Clean Out Kit bag — which comes complete with their address and a prepaid shipping label on it — fill it up with your used clothing, and return the bag via FedEx or USPS at no upfront cost to you. Or, you can even schedule a free residential pick up.

Items are sorted through and those that aren’t accepted for sale are either donated to a charity, or can be returned to the sender. (You will have to pay for the shipping back, though.) Accepted items are either sold upfront or via consignment. Any items with an initial listing price of $59.99 or less qualifies for an upfront payout. Sellers can expect to earn 5% to 40% of the anticipated selling price. An item with an initial listing price of $60 or more qualifies for a consignment payout. Sellers can expect to earn 50% to 80% of the selling price.

Once an item sells, thredUP notifies you, and after 14 days, you can use the earnings to shop on or cash out via PayPal or a thredUP Visa Prepaid Card.

This is a great way to sell things if you don’t feel like taking pictures of your items or doing the research needed to figure out the right pricing for your clothing. You also won’t have to handle any of the shipping. I would venture to guess it’s one of the easiest ways to go about selling your clothing online. Of course, you probably won’t make quite as much as if you were selling each individual item yourself. But if you only have the time — or desire — to fill up and mail ONE bag, then this route might be the one for you!



Ten years ago, eBay was it. If you wanted to sell something online, you turned to eBay! However, with an ever-increasing number of policy changes and rising sellers’ fees, many people have jumped ship and switched to other platforms for their online sales. That being said, eBay continues to be a popular spot for online sellers.

eBay’s mission is to be the world’s favorite destination for discovering great value and unique selection. On eBay, you can put your used clothing and pretty much anything else you could dream of selling. One lady once sold a partially eaten grilled cheese sandwich for $28,000. She believed– and obviously plenty of other people did, too — that it had an image of the virgin Mary in one of it’s slices of bread. (Source). With eBay, you put your item up for auction, which is open to bids for exactly 1, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days. When the time is up, the highest bidder wins and you ship him or her your product.

There is a small fee to list each item, and eBay takes 10% of the value of the sale when an item sells. You can read about eBay’s current fees here.



How can you sell clothing on Instagram? You can do it within your own account. Or, you can open up a specific account just for clothing sales. Personally, I feel like this would be the better way to go so you don’t flood your friends’ feeds with photos of clothing you want to sell.

Here are seven easy steps to get up and running with your very own “clothing store” on instagram.

  1. Create your new account. You might choose a name like “Kate’s Closet”. Well, you might if you were me : )
  2. Start out with a welcome post. Tell people about yourself and show them who you are with an up-to-date photo. This is important as you want to build trust.
  3. Your next post should be a policies post. Explain to customers things like how quickly you ship, average shipping costs, payment methods you accept (most people opt for Paypal), etc. People who are power sellers on Instagram suggest including the cost of shipping in the price of the item. It helps to simplify things for your shoppers.
  4. Take a beautiful photo of the item you wish to sell. It needs to be a great photo otherwise people won’t pay attention. Include hashtags like #instasale #clothesforsale #shopmycloset #instacloset so that people can find your post! Include details … size, measurements, colors, brand, etc. … along with the image.
  5. Have people leave their Paypal email address in the comments of a post to indicate that they want to buy something. If multiple people leave a comment with their Paypal address, most store’s policy is to select the first commenter.
  6. Create a detailed invoice through Paypal and send it to the buyer. When you price your items, remember to factor into your costs the fees that Paypal takes from every transaction.
  7. Once the buyer pays the invoice, ship the item … and you’re done!

With Instagram, you have total control over how the process goes. You set the policies. That’s pretty awesome! However, it’s not quite as easy as it all sounds. The difference between selling items on Instagram and using an app like Poshmark is that you definitely will have more work on your end. Poshmark handles the invoicing, label creation, policies, etc.

But if you’re willing to do the work, there are fewer fees involved and many people report amazing success via clothing sales on Instagram.


Tradesy specializes in authentic designer clothing and accessories. On any given day, the site has $300 million worth of merchandise offered for sale, according to a recent article in USA Today.

If you are hoping to sell high-end items, this might be the choice for you!

How do you sell your clothing with Tradesy? Simply snap a few photos of the clothing you wish to sell, add a description and price, and your listing will be up and running within 60 seconds. There is no fee to list your item. Once the item sells, Tradesy will send you a free pre-paid shipping kit. Pack up the item and send it on it’s way. The company takes a 9% commission, but only after the item sells. You can then withdraw your earnings using Paypal, a debit card, or an ACH transfer.

If you’re sitting on a pile of amazing vintage clothes, an Etsy store might be a great way to sell them. If you just want to sell a few items and that’s it … then stick with eBay, Poshmark, or something a little more quick and easy. But if you have a lot of clothes and really think you’d enjoy making a part-time or even full-time business out of the sale of vintage clothing, Etsy might be the right choice!

To join Etsy and start a shop is free. You’ll pay three basic selling fees: a listing fee, a transaction fee, and a payment processing fee. It costs US $0.20 to publish a listing to the marketplace. A listing lasts for four months or until the item is sold.

I juuuuuust opened up an Etsy store with the goal of selling some of the natural beauty treatments I enjoy making. Since I’m not the best person to offer up an advice on how to make a successful go at vintage clothing sales on Etsy, I’ll refer you to someone who is! how to choose the right wedding dress — from a wedding photographer’s perspective

One of my absolute favorite parts of a wedding day is photographing the bride getting ready. Slowly but surely, after months and months of trials and fittings, she is transformed into the radiant bride of her (and her fiance’s!) dreams. I’ve watched this rite of passage occur over and over and one thing has become 110% clear to me: What a woman wears dramatically affects how she feels about herself, which in turn directly affects how beautiful she looks in her pictures.

If you want AMAZING wedding pictures that make people gasp and say, “I’ve never seen a more radiant or beautiful bride!”, I’ll tell you exactly how to get them!

It has nothing to do with selecting the trendiest gown.

It has even less to do with how closely you resemble a Victoria’s Secret model. (Phew.)

It’s all about how you feel in the dress.

Like any article of clothing, your wedding dress can make you feel incredible, laugh more easily, put a twinkle in your eye, and empower you to feel like you could take on the world. Or, better yet, marry the man of your dreams!

Without even one word uttered, I immediately know if a bride is uncomfortable with how she looks in her dress. It doesn’t matter if she’s wearing a gown that was pinned millions of times. And it doesn’t matter if her gown looked amazing on all the girls in the Instagram posts that flooded her feed. She could be wearing the “IT” gown of the year … but if she doesn’t feel amazing in that dress, I can tell. And so can my camera.

Why am I writing an entire article about something that seems so obvious? As a wedding photographer, I want you to LOVE your pictures. It’s hard to love pictures of yourself if all you see when you look at them is that problem area glaring back at you. Plus, it’s hard to relax and enjoy the day if you’re worried about the photographer catching you from a bad angle. Here’s the reality: Relaxed brides ALWAYS get beautiful pictures. Period. So in order to feel relaxed and beautiful in your dress, here are a few suggestions that I hope will set you on the path towards drop-dead gorgeous wedding pictures.

  1. Choose your dress early on in the planning process — maybe even first. This is most important if you know that you struggle with self-esteem issues or often don’t like how you look in pictures. Once you’ve got THE gown that makes you feel like a million bucks, the rest of your wedding can fall into place. If you are uncomfortable with your calves, for example, don’t buy a tea-length dress to coordinate with the afternoon garden party theme you think would be fun. (Sidenote: if your calves aren’t your best asset but you totally don’t care and you feel awesome in a tea-length dress … well, that’s a WHOOOOOLE other story! Go to it!)
  2. Have someone take pictures of yourself in your gown from every angle before you make your final decision. Even the slimmest girls sometimes deal with bulges over the back of their strapless gown. Be honest with yourself if you see this in your pictures. Does it bother you? If so, this isn’t the dress for you. Keep in mind that you will be photographed from all angles during your wedding day, not just from the front. Will you not like any of the pictures of you and your husband standing at the alter if you have any rolls exposed on your back? If this will bother you, then refer to suggestions three and four!
  3. If you love the look of a strapless gown but aren’t happy with your arms or back, consider adding a beautiful bolero so that you get a little extra coverage. It shouldn’t look like a cover-up. Who wants to wear a cover-up on their wedding day?! Check Etsy for some awesome custom-made boleros, wraps, and other ingenious additions to wedding dresses that can conceal problem areas while truly adding to the look of a gown. And again, I would recommend taking pictures of yourself in the dress and bolero together first to make sure you really feel good about how you look.
  4. Don’t be scared of long sleeves. For every 2,000 strapless gowns, you’ll find one gorgeous gown with sleeves. They’re out there … you just have to look a little harder. Although thanks to celebs like Ivanka Trump, Molly Sims, and Kate Middletown, sleeves are making a come back! If you can’t find a long-sleeve dress that doesn’t scream ’80s (complete with giant shoulder pads), consider working with a wedding dress designer on Etsy who can custom create a dress for you that is PERFECT for your shape and can include the right type of sleeve length for your arms.
  5. Work with a wedding dress consultant who truly has your best interest at heart. A person who genuinely cares about others is easy to spot. If you feel like she’s not really interested in helping you find a gown that looks great on your shape, move on. There’s someone out there who does care and will help you pick a gown that makes you look better than you ever thought possible. Ask around. Your friends will no doubt have recommendations.
  6. Be honest with yourself. If you’re thinking that the mermaid shaped dress will look fabulous on you in 6 months after you’ve dropped 40 pounds of belly fat (which you TOTALLY intend to do), you may be setting yourself up for disaster. It’s wonderful to plan to shape up for a big event like your wedding, but don’t COUNT on it. Sometimes life gets in the way of our best workout and diet plans! Choose a dress that looks gorgeous on you right now … and then if you do drop some weight, you’ll just look even better in it.
  7. Remember your bridesmaids struggle with insecurities, too. I’ve photographed bridal parties where, clearly, people felt awful about how they looked in the dress. The girls weren’t complaining … but it was written all over their faces. One of THE nicest ways to handle that type of situation is to pick a color from a designer and let your girls all pick the dress that works best with their shape. That’s how my best friend did it and I can tell you that all of her bridal party was happy and looked happy in her pictures. This doesn’t work for every wedding, but certainly keeping your bridesmaids’ feelings and body-image concerns in mind will go a long way towards creating an awesome day for you all.

don’t let fear hold you back … dive in!


Are you trying to run a business? Maybe you’re a photographer, clothing designer, or a blogger and you have yet to reach your true success. It can be frustrating, to say the least. What do you think is holding your business back?

I’ll share with you what often holds me and my business back: FEAR. If you could spend a day in my head, you would …

  1. Be amazed at how many times I think about food.
  2. Be sad to hear the negative things I often tell myself!

You probably DON’T think about food as much as I do. (Seriously. I have a problem.) But, like me, you too have fears. And that’s ok because it’s totally natural to feel fear. (I mean, fear keeps us from going down dark alleys alone, right? It definitely serves a purpose!)

But the problem with fear is that it often fuels the lies we tell ourselves. We say things like …

“I’m not smart enough to do … ”

“I don’t have enough education to do … ”

“There are way too many other people who do X better than me already. I should quit.”

These, my friend, are LIES. Outright LIES. And the worst part is … no one else is saying it to us. (Well, maybe one or two people in your life may feel like they’re “helping” you by being negative.)  The person who often says the MOST negatives things to you is … YOU.
